AUDITION PROCESS

Admission to the NBS Professional Ballet Program is based on a two-stage audition process:

Stage One - Professional Ballet Program (Ballet Academic and Post-Secondary)
Stage One consists of an abbreviated dance class taught by NBS faculty in one of 17 or more cities across Canada finishing with auditions in Toronto.
Classes are age-appropriate and cover a range of age groups.

Who can audition?

  • Students entering academic grades 6-12 in September, 2008
  • Students who have completed high school in a rigorous full-time dance program who wish to prepare for professional careers.
  • Students entering Grade 5 in September 2008 may audition for NBS's Introductory Summer School.

The Audition
The audition class can be both enjoyable and challenging much like a regular class. Taught by NBS faculty, they are specially structured to assess a range of criteria including; coordination, musicality, quality of movement and physical suitability for the demands of classical ballet. No special preparation is required. Prior dance training is not essential for children under 12 years of age.

NBS is holding auditions in more than 22 cities across Canada on their 2007/08 National Audition Tour. For the location nearest you please refer to National Audition Tour Cities.

Stage Two - Summer School at Canada's National Ballet School

Who Attends

  • Students who have successfully auditioned for the Professional Ballet Program or the Grade 5 Introductory Summer School can attend a four-week intensive Summer School at NBS facilities in Toronto from July 8 to August 1, 2008. Approximately 200 auditioning students are invited to attend dance classes for the four-week period along with returning NBS students.

The Next Step

During Summer School, students are assessed on their suitability for NBS’s classical ballet program. Academic test results and interpersonal skills are also taken into account. Approximately 50 auditioning students will be invited to join the full-time Professional Ballet Program in September 2008.

The audition process is designed to be a positive experience. Students are encouraged to maintain their love of dancing and to recognize the many training options available to them. Those not invited to join the full-time program are welcome to audition again the following year.
